Design and Technologies

Will your boat float?

Explore how technologies use forces to create movement in products (ACTDEK002)

Use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques to safely make designed solutions (ACTDEP007)

This resource address the two content descriptors above. It consists of a unit plan that explains four 40 minute lessons. Students are to design and built a boat that can float and move. Allows differentiation and allows all students to extend their knowledge and understanding.

Planet To Plate

Explore how plants and animals are grown for food, clothing and shelter and how food is selected and prepared for healthy eating (ACTDEK003).

Explore needs or opportunities for designing, and the technologies needed to realise designed solutions (ACTDEP005)

This resource provides teachers with ideas for a mini unit of work  with three lessons focusing on where food comes from and how its prepared to be safely consumed. Can also be used for Health classes.

Design a Classroom

To explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions (ACTDEK004).

To explore needs or opportunities for designing, and the technologies needed to realise designed solutions (ACTDEP005).

This resource is loaded with lesson plans, assessment and get its quite easy to understand from a teachers view, parents and a students perspective. This resource also implements a content descriptor from the Geography Curriculum.

 My New Uniform

Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions (ACTDEK004)

Explore needs or opportunities for designing, and the technologies needed to realise designed solutions (ACTDEP005)

This resource allows students to change whatever they like about the school uniform with reasoning and justification. It will allow them to develop ideas and explore how different materials act and are used in designing. THey will present their designs and ideas to the class providing examples and justifications.

Digital Technologies

 BeeBots Programming

Recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose (ACTDIK001)

Follow, describe and represent a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve simple problems (ACTDIP004)

This lesson involves pupils being introduced to Bee-Bots, which are programmable devices, to find out what they can do and how to program them. They will begin to use specific vocabulary associated with programming and understand that they can control the device by creating simple algorithms. Children younger than Year 1 can certainly access this lesson and the promotion of computer science language is beneficial for the children as they move up the school years

what is tech f-2.PNG

 What is Technology?

Recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose (ACTDIK001)

Create and organise ideas and information using information systems independently and with others, and share these with known people in safe online environments (ACTDIP006)

This resource mainly focuses on teaching students the dangers and how to be safe online. It also incorporates basic operating skills such as using Microsoft word. There is a Unit plan and interactive resources and reading material for teachers and students to further utilise.

detective f-2.PNG

Data Detective: The missing Birthday's case

Recognise and explore patterns in data and represent data as pictures, symbols and diagrams (ACTDIK002)

Collect, explore and sort data, and use digital systems to present the data creatively (ACTDIP003)

Review of the source shows that this is a link to a webquest for students. This particular page highlights what students will achieve, curriculum alignments, offline resources for the teacher to distribute and the introduction to an exciting adventure. This resource provides links to webquest activities where students not only develop the necessary skills to achieve the Technologies curriculum, but they also develop data building skills in a mathematical sense developing data spreadsheets and graphs.

Help Parking Pete Make a CarPark!

Recognise and explore patterns in data and represent data as pictures, symbols and diagrams (ACTDIK002)

Collect, explore and sort data, and use digital systems to present the data creatively (ACTDIP003)

This resource focuses on three student outcomes. The student outcomes are heavily around collecting data, comparing data and showing data in an appropriate way. This webquest is interactive for students, easily understood in the way it is written, and there is a teachers page justifying what the students are learning. The resource aligns with the Australian Curriculum and General Capabilites framework.
